A Scavenger Takes Flight
It’s been a great week and I’d like to thank everyone for their feedback and comments. The journey that is digital photography is one that continually evolves and I am happy to be sharing it with so many talented photographers. It’s a wonderful experience and a great way to continually learn the craft.
This Turkey Vulture had been dining on a nearby (out of the frame) deer that met an untimely end. I had just enough time to grab the camera and catch the return to flight.
It’s sort of funny how these birds are often seen as low-lifes and unworthy of the grace and praise extended to other species like the glorious Eagle, Osprey and many others. But these guys, while less graceful, certainly provide a service to nature’s delicate balance.
Not a lot of processing on this, it’s pretty much as shot. I simply pulled the image into Camera Raw for a few touch-ups and cropped it to eliminate most of the scene while leaving room for the bird to exit.
Camera: Nikon D5000 | Lens: Nikkor 18-200mm | Processing: Photoshop CS5

The more I get into bird photography, the harder I realize it is. Nice catch here!

Thanks, David.
Catching just the right moment is often as much about luck as anything else.
