Patrolling Pair
These United States Navy patrol craft, the YP 683 and YP 687, were delivered to the US Naval Academy in Annapolis Maryland in 1986 and 1987, respectively. They are primarily used as training craft and can often be found moored outside of the Academy on the Severn River just upstream from the Chesapeake Bay.
The image below was taken as the sun was rising during the Baltimore Sailabration in mid-June. More than 60 tall ships were in port to mark the bicentennial of The Star Spangled Banner, our National Anthem. Written by Francis Scott Key, the poem that became this nation’s anthem was inspired by the bombardment of nearby Fort McHenry. But I digress.

These twins were built by Marinette Marine in Marinette, WI. , each with twin Detroit diesel engines cranking out 437 horsepower at the shaft and sporting a range of 1800 nautical miles.
In the post-processing department, I used Lightroom 4 and a “Sunrise” preset I created. As time allows I continue to build a library of presets and will share some of them here in the near future. Thus far, I only have a hand full of them.
Next we have a “Medium Tone” version of the “Patrolling Pair”, also processed in LR4.

Lastly, the original RAW file “As shot”, simply passed through ACR untouched then converted to a JPEG for posting here.
Until next time, thanks for clicking by!

the sepia version brings it back in time very well

I have always wanted to visit Annapolis but never seem to get there. E=Very nice shots Jimi. I especially like the middle image.

The black and white one reminds me of McHale’s Navy. I need to get out to Annapolis soon to visit my brother.

Haha… I thought of McHale’s Navy as well during processing. So it wasn’t just me.
If you get this way soon, give a shout.

How cool to see different versions of the same shot. Its difficult to pick a favorite. I cant explain why, but I like the second version at a lot.

Sweet shots man! I think I like the middle shot best. The tons really bring out a strong mood especially with the billowing smoke in the back. Gives it a more industrial military feel to it that just works.

Nice work Jimi, I like the tones in the first one although the sepia toned second is also very nice

I really like your sunrise preset, Jimi. Gives the shot a great, warm look and fits the subject.

Fantastic processing Jimi. I really love the first one. I honestly thought you shot that at sunset. Great job.

I like the sepia toned version although I would be tempted to lessen the vignette a little, especially in the upper corners (highlight retention [guessing the name as I am not inf ront of LR4 at the moment] slider under the vignette). The sunrise version is also really nice.
