Architectural images are among my favorites to produce so when I came upon an amphitheater some months ago I knew I just had to have a few shots of it. This style of architecture dates to the first century BC when the Romans were building their entertainment complexes. They were the sports arenas of the day, and what a grand idea. With the tiered seating, everyone had a fairly good viewpoint. Most of these structures were circular or oval in shape which further enhanced the view.

Taken with a Nikkor 10.5mm f2.8 during the mid-morning hours, this is a shot I nearly missed. The sun cleared the rim of the amphitheater within minutes of taking this and the entire scene became too harsh for my liking.

In the foreground is a section marker that I started to remove but since it was section “1″ I decided to leave it in place. Another streak of luck I guess, as this was completely unplanned. In fact, I never saw the marker until I chose the image for processing. How I missed that during the composition phase is beyond me. :-)

For those of you wondering where this amphitheater is located, it’s Arlington National Cemetery, about a 15 minute walk from this curbside view.

Thanks so much for visiting!

Ohhh, I like this. I am thinking of buying that fisheye. There is a way to mod it for use with a FF lens. Really nice work Jimi.
