Quick post and run today as I move closer to completion on a client project. I am also running behind on site visits but will catch up and see you latest creations soon.

Today I thought I would try something a little different and have posted my first image where I utilized the “Oil Paint” filter in Photoshop CS6. It is one of the many exciting new features in this software package and it really stirs the imagination for me.

Below we have a simple image of a waterman. Having just returned from his commercial fishing trip, he has disconnected this dinghy boat from the larger vessel and has bought a few tools to shore.

Like most plugins and filters, their strength can be their weakness if not used judiciously. Much like HDR processing, one must find their comfort zone in terms of how far you want to push the contrasts and details of any particular image. In this case, the effects of the Oil Paint filter have been lightly applied as shown.

As always, your feedback is of valuable importance. Let me know what you think below.

Thanks for clicking by! :-)

Interesting effect. It might look really good on a large canvas. The web version just seems like it’s not quite there for an oil painting, like there is too much detail if you know what I mean.

Thanks, Rick. Yes, I do know what you mean. The effect does flatten out a bit at 72DPI on the web. It looks closer to what the effect is suppose to be in CS6. May have to compensate a bit for online versions, so I will play around with the sliders a bit more to find that sweet spot.

It’s a fun effect, glad you’re enjoying it as well, Mark.
This is my first use of it and I’ve noticed that there is a little loss of the overall effect once posted to the internet, as pointed out by Rick. That only means more fun ahead. ;-)

I am looking forward to doing more of these.

  5. An interesting effect which works well on the boat, the water and the grasses in the background. I’m just not sure about the effect on the fisherman himself, especially on the skin tones.
