I have long been a fan of architecture, it’s one of my favorite subjects for photography. One thing that is most interesting, at least for me, are the vertical lines of a scene. There is just something about them that lends a sense of strength, and not just for architecture but for any scene.

The scene below is full of vertical structures and lines.

But then I found myself focusing on the foot bridge and decided to narrow that focus and make it the star of the story. Two thoughts came to mind, with the first being to add a blur effect, as seen below.

The second effect was to shade out a portion of the image. Since the sunlight was beaming in from the east (morning shot), which is the right side of this image, the shaded area would naturally fall on the left as seen in the final image.

Yes, horizontal lines contribute to any scene as well.

One of these is my preferred method for this image, but I’d like to hear from you. The effects are quite subtle.  Which would you choose?

Thanks for your feedback!

Very nice image Jimi. I prefer the first image. I think the reflection on the building on the left is killer and the blur minimizes it. On the last image, I think that the lit part of the red building is just a tad too dark for the scene. Showing it a little more lit (but not as much as the first image) would make it my favorite.

Great job Jimi. I really like the middle, blurred image. I find the slight blur helps lead the eye and creates a bit of mystery and I like that the red still pops in the middle image.

  6. You are right that the changes are subtle, but I think I like the top one the best. The two effects you add, the blur and the shading, are not overdone at all, but I also don’t think the image needed them.

Very nice… I like the first!

  8. Nice find Jimi. My choice would be the first image. I agree with Mark that this scene didn’t need the blur or shading on the sides.

Great image, Jimi. The first is the best, most realistic. The blur in the second is actually distracting, and the left side of the third looks unnatural with the shadow on the lower part of the already darker red wall. My take anyway. :-)

Nice set of photos, Jimi. There is a lot to be conscious of when taking the photos like this. Nice work.

  11. I think the first one works best for this image, Jimi. I don’t think the changes you made in the other two versions, subtle as they are have a positive effect on this image. One other suggestion, and this would also need to be very subtle, would be to change the footbridge itself. This could be a very slight lightening of the bridge deck and/or a change in the tone to lessen the blue from the shadows.

  12. I like all of them Jimi, but I think that the first one is my favorite.
